A special blend of ingredients is formulated together to create a substrate for the production of mushrooms. Specific amounts of straw, hay, ground corncobs and other organic materials are blended together using a large Pre-Wet machine that blends the ingredients into a homogeneous mixture while adding large volumes of water during the process.

The initial Pre-Wet stage of Phase I composting takes place outdoors on a concrete pad for a period of four days. During this period the ingredients are mixed 5 to 6 times to achieve a homogeneous mixture and moisture content of 75%.

The second stage of Phase I composting is conducted in an enclosed concrete bunker which has an aerated floor that allows for better environmental controls of the substrate and aerobic conditions. During this stage the substrate temperatures will rise to 180 degrees F and after fourteen days the material is transferred to the Phase II process.
